Dessers repeats last-gasp trick against AZ

Another injury-time breakthrough from Cyriel Dessers earned Feyenoord all three points at home to AZ in the Eredivisie on Sunday. Dessers came off the bench to grab the winning goal for the third time in succession. In fact, it was also the fourth time this season that super-sub scored in time added on.

Everyone at De Kuip probably thought that Dessers had blown the last chance to secure victory for his side in the final minute of regular time when he failed to connect with his foot in the box. By then Feyenoord had already spurned a host of opportunities to take the lead, primarily in the first half.

Arne Slot’s team were much less of a threat after the break. AZ were busier too, creating openings of their own. The hosts remained level thanks to two brilliant saves from Justin Bijlow and a last-gasp clearance from Gernot Trauner.

As the clock ticked down it looked increasingly like the spoils would be shared. Especially after Dessers fluffed his shot on the 90 with the goal seemingly at his mercy. But the breakthrough finally came in time added-on, with Dessers and his fellow substitute Reiss Nelson combining to full effect. The goal triggered jubilant scenes on the pitch and in the stands as fans and players alike celebrated Feyenoord’s fifth win on the bounce.

Feyenoord now have a chance to rest and recovery after some busy weeks in the Eredivisie and the UECL, although lots of players have been called up to their respective national teams. Next up after the international break if a home game against PEC Zwolle on Sunday 21 November (kick-off 14:30 CET).
