European season off to a great start

Feyenoord began their Europa League campaign in style on Thursday night. Georgian outfit Dinamo Tbilisi were beaten 4-0 at De Kuip in the third qualifying round first leg fixture. It gives head coach Jaap Stam’s team a good platform to build on in the next week’s return.

The hosts took control from the kick off against the leaders of Georgia’s Erovnuli Liga. Feyenoord created a string of chances but had to wait until almost the end of the half before getting the breakthrough. Luis Sinisterra scored from a low Steven Berghuis cross on 42 minutes.

The game remained up for grabs until 11 minutes before the end, when Dinamo substitute Akaki Shulaia was shown his second yellow of the night and trudged off. Down to ten men, the Georgians were soon hopelessly behind. David Kobouri headed into his own net within seconds of the restart, then Berghuis converted a penalty four minutes later.

Luciano Narsingh grabbed a fourth on 87 minutes, his first for Feyenoord, but the build-up was where the magic was. Some Sam Larsson trickery on the edge of the box left his marker for dead, giving the Swede the time and space to pick out Narsingh a few yards out.

Next up for Feyenoord is a trip to sc Heerenveen on Sunday, with the EL second leg against Dinamo Tbilisi set for Thursday, kick off 18:30.
