Feyenoord add Gernot Trauner to squad

Gernot Trauner is the newest recruit to the Feyenoord squad. The 29-year-old central defender joins from Austrian Football Bundesliga side LASK Linz on a four-year deal that runs until mid- 2025.

Feyenoord technical director Frank Arnesen is happy with Trauner’s arrival to strengthen head coach Arne Slot’s defensive options. ‘We were expressly looking for experience for that line. We’ve found him in the shape of Gernot, a very refined player who has played at the highest level in Austria for more than ten years. He is very strong defensively and he fits well with the playing philosophy we have in mind at Feyenoord, pressurising aggressively and breaking forward fast with the ball. So a good fit.’

Trauner, who has five Austria caps, says he’s looking forward to starting a new chapter in his football career. ‘It was not an easy decision to leave LASK, but seeing the city of Rotterdam and the Feyenoord club for the first time made it a lot of easier for me. With my experience I hope to add something to this talented squad. After meeting the coach I am even more enthusiastic, because I think I fit the way of playing he has in mind.’

Trauner joins the Feyenoord squad immediately and will wear the number 18 shirt, which was previously worn by Aliou Balde. The Senegal striker will now wear the number 23 shirt.
