Feyenoord and Urawa Red Diamonds eSporters to collide in Tokyo

Feyenoord eSporters YimmieHD and FeyenoordJaeyD will travel to Japan next week for an international friendly match against Urawa Red Diamonds. In their first ever FIFA International Match, the two teams’ top players will showcase their specific playing styles in head-to-head 1vs1 and 2vs2 exhibition matches.

The match is organised by JeSU, the newly established Japanese eSports Union, and is fully supported by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Japan. The match will take place on an exciting stage: the Tokyo Game Show 2018, one of the world’s biggest video game conventions. The showdown will be a unique example of how partnerships in traditional sports can be extended from the football pitch to the digital playing field, enriching both.

The match commemorates the special relationship between Japan and the Netherlands and the special bond between Urawa Red Diamonds and Feyenoord, not only on the football pitch but also in eSports. The two clubs have had a special relationship, ever since Shinji Ono transferred to Feyenoord Rotterdam in 2001.

To tighten the bond and cooperation Urawa made several official visits to Feyenoord last season. During the last occasion Feyenoord CEO Jan de Jong met up with Urawa president Keizo Fuchita in Rotterdam.
