Feyenoord sign Mats Wieffer

Mats Wieffer has put his signature to a four-year contract with Feyenoord. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder joins the club from city neighbours Excelsior Rotterdam.

Technical director Frank Arnesen is happy to have sealed the deal to bring Wieffer to the club. ‘Mats is a young but very steady midfielder who we’ve been watching for a while now. He showed last season as one of the mainstays at Excelsior in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie that he’s cut from the right cloth. We will give him the time and space to continue to develop as a footballer so that he can show he’s also able to play at this level. We are certainly confident of that.’

‘I had the feeling that I was ready for the next step and so it’s really great when a big club like Feyenoord comes in for you,’ says Wieffer, who sees himself as a proper box-to-box player who can run all day. ‘So I didn’t need to think for long about whether I wanted to join Feyenoord. Now I’m here I’ll do everything I can to prove I belong here.’

Overijssel-born Wieffer started his football career in his home town at RKSV NEO Borne, where he was picked up by the FC Twente youth academy. He switched to Excelsior Rotterdam in the summer of 2020, where he has made 77 appearances, helping the club gain promotion to the Eredivisie through the play-offs last season.

Feyenoord will announce the squad numbers in preseason.
