Feyenoord decide against taking up Dessers option

Feyenoord will not be taking up the option to buy Cyriel Dessers outright. The club had until midnight tonight to trigger the clause in the loan agreement with KRC Genk to buy the player but has decided against doing so.

Feyenoord technical director Frank Arnesen says that he looks back on the past season with Dessers with great pleasure. ‘A memorable year, for many reasons. Cyriel did exactly what we brought him in to do: score goals and make a difference. He made a big contribution to the European success the club has had this year. And not unimportantly: he stole the hearts of the De Kuip crowd. We therefore wish him every success in his further football career.’

Dessers wanted to personally thank the club and especially the Feyenoord fans. ‘I had a great time at Feyenoord. Last year I chose this club just before the transfer window closed and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my career. The whole season was one big adventure, with the success in Europe and the fabulous relationship with the crowd sticking out proudly. I’ll cherish the number 33 and Feyenoord for the rest of my life.’

The Tongeren-born Dessers made 41 appearances for Feyenoord in the season just ended, scoring 20 goals and claiming a further four assists. In the UEFA Europa Conference League he finished tournament top scorer, netting ten times, with Feyenoord reaching the final.
