Feyenoord ease into quarterfinals

Feyenoord booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Europa Conference League in convincing fashion at De Kuip on Thursday. The hosts followed up last week’s 5-2 win in Serbia with a 3-1 victory in front of their fans. Cyriel Dessers, Reiss Nelson and Bryan Linssen were the scorers.
The hosts went into the game with a healthy three-goal cushion after the first leg in Belgrade. Happily, as Feyenoord were unable to call on a number of important names for the return due to covid-19 – including head coach Arne Slot – and (minor) injuries. That said, the on-the-field replacements more than stepped up to the mark.

In control
Feyenoord took firm control early on and dominated throughout. And after Cyriel Dessers deflected a Jens Toornstra freekick into the goal to give his side the lead on the stroke of half time the result never looked in doubt. The second half was slow to get going, but Reiss Nelson doubled the lead on the hour mark, converting a through-ball from Guus Til.

Ricardo Gomes pulled one back for the visitors with a hard shot into the left corner, but substitute Bryan Linssen restored Feyenoord’s two goal lead in the last minute with a belter.

The 3-1 win is a confidence boost for Feyenoord ahead of Sunday’s big game at Ajax. The Klassieker kicks off at 14:30 CET.

Draw
The draw for the quarterfinals is set for Friday afternoon. Potential Feyenoord opponents are FK Bodø/Glimt, AS Roma, Olympique Marseille, PAOK Saloniki, Leicester City, PSV and Slavia Prague.
