Feyenoord edge into next round of the cup

Feyenoord beat Heracles Almelo at De Kuip on Wednesday night to reach the quarter finals of the TOTO KNVB Cup. Goals by Luis Sinisterra, Bryan Linssen and Lutsharel Geertruida were just enough to force a 3-2 win.
A midweek cup tie was the perfect opportunity to wash away any woes after Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Ajax. But though Feyenoord started the match with a positive mindset after dominating the league leaders for more than an hour at the Johan Cruijff Arena, the first 45 at De Kuip were less successful.

Bad start
Heracles Almelo raced up field towards Nick Marsman’s goal straight from the kick-off. The Feyenoord keeper was forced to pull off a reflex save to deny Delano Burgzorg after just 10 seconds. The hosts soon managed to shake off that bad start though, creating chances through Luis Sinisterra (header) and Steven Berghuis (volley), but neither found the target.

In the end it was Burgzorg after all who opened the scoring. With 33 minutes on the clock the forward found himself pitted himself against Marsman again. This time, rather than shooting first time Burgzorg dummied the Marsman before stroking the ball home. The visitors looked like taking their lead into the break but were to be disappointed. In the final minute of the half a Feyenoord free kick broke down, but the ball ended up at the feet of Luis Sinisterra. The Colombian pulled the trigger to equalise.

Golden substitution
Dick Advocaat introduced Ridgeciano Haps and Bryan Linssen for Orkun Kökcü and Lucas Pratto immediately after the break and the hosts soon started to play better football and create more chances. Haps could only hit the bar on 52 minutes, but Linssen netted a minute later. He raced onto a perfectly judged through-ball, beating Heracles keeper Janis Blaswich with a hard shot to the near post.

That put Linssen on five goals for the season alongside Lutsharel Geertruida, but the right wingback added another one to his total on 84 minutes, getting his head to a free kick from substitute Mark Diemers. That would prove to be the winner, with Adrian Szöke pulling one back for the visitors near the end.

Drawn away in quarter finals
The win put Feyenoord into the quarter finals of the TOTO KNVB Cup, with Excelsior, sc Heerenveen, AZ/Ajax and N.E.C./Fortuna Sittard the possible opponents. Next up in the Eredivisie is another tough match, with AZ visiting De Kuip on Sunday, kick-off 16:45 CET.
