Feyenoord eliminated in extra time

Feyenoord’s cup dream came to a premature end in Enschede on Wednesday. Arne Slot’s team showed a lot of fight but were sunk in extra time, ultimately going down 2-1 to FC Twente.

The hosts had Lars Unnerstall to thank for the win. Just like in the recent Eredivisie encounter between the sides, the German keeper frustrated the visitors with a string of saves. That said, Cyriel Dessers did outfox Unnerstall early in the second half, turning in an Alireza Jahanbakhsh cross to give Feyenoord the lead.

The home side hit back ten minutes from time and as at the weekend in Groningen it was a goal that could have been avoided from Feyenoord’s point of view. Giovanni Troupée netted against the run of play to take the game into extra time. That was clearly not what Slot’s team wanted, given their already rammed fixture list and Sunday’s Klassieker against Ajax at De Kuip.

Feyenoord continued to push forward in search of a goal during the extra 30 minutes, but it was the hosts who managed to find the winner. FC Twente had scarcely been out of their own half, but when the hosts did break the ball came to substitute Manfred Ugalde, who pulled the trigger. Feyenoord gave it all in the final minutes in the quest for a leveller, and Dessers almost found it at the death, only to be denied by Unnerstall.

It left Feyenoord frustrated and fatigued after a two-hour tussle. But Arne Slot’s men will have to quickly shrug off the defeat and turn their attentions to Sunday’s big one against Ajax. De Kuip hosts that one, which kicks off at 14:30 CET.
