Feyenoord lose lacklustre Klassieker

Feyenoord came up short against Ajax in the centenary year of the Klassieker on Sunday. The visitors claimed all three points with a 2-0 win in an unremarkable encounter at an empty De Kuip.
As so often the case in recent club history, Feyenoord did not do themselves justice against the Amsterdammers. Exhibit A was the series of home blunders that led to Ajax’s opening goal at the end of the first half. It started with Jens Toornstra surrendering possession and ended with Marcos Senesi putting the ball into his own net.

That was a big blow for the hosts, but Feyenoord came out swinging in the second half in their quest for an equaliser. As well as showing a willingness to fight, Arne Slot’s side also created a number of opportunities, including one that fell to substitute Nelson Reiss. But on the whole Feyenoord never really managed to knock Ajax off balance.

The hosts’ chances of getting back on level terms were dealt a heavy blow when referee Dennis Higler awarded a penalty for a Reiss Nelson foul on Devyne Rensch on 81 minutes. Dusan Tadic stepped up to convert from the spot and make Feyenoord’s miserable afternoon even worse.

Feyenoord have an opportunity to get back to winning ways before the winter break when they travel to sc Heerenveen in the Eredivisie (kick-off 21:00 CET).
