Feyenoord secure third place in Deventer

A 1-0 win at Go Ahead Eagles on Wednesday evening means that Feyenoord can no longer be overhauled in third place in the Eredivisie. With just Sunday’s final round of matches to play, Arne Slot’s side have an unassailable lead over fourth place FC Twente, who travel to De Kuip at the weekend for the concluding fixture.
Both sides went into the midweek encounter in Deventer fairly secure in their respective positions in the table. With two matches left Feyenoord were six points ahead of FC Twente and had a far superior goal difference. Go Ahead Eagles on the other hand needed a highly unlikely run of results to snatch a berth in the end of season play-offs for European qualification.

Slot shuffles pack
Slot made seven changes to his line-up, with Patrik Wålemark given his first start. After the break the head coach also brought on Dermane Karim (18) for his first-team bow. All those changes would have been a factor as Feyenoord found it hard to play the type of game that the supporters have become used to under Slot, although the visitors were tight at the back.

In the end, Bryan Linssen grabbed the only goal of the game on 71 minutes. Alireza Jahanbakhsh started the move with an interception, with Linssen finishing impressively by stroking the ball into the right corner. With Ofir Marciano keeping a clean sheet at the other end, the match ended without further drama.

The win leaves Feyenoord on 71 points with that final Eredivisie match to play, a home fixture against FC Twente that kicks off at 14:30 CET. The season wraps up on Wednesday 25 May in Tirana, where Feyenoord take on AS Roma in the inaugural Europa Conference League final.
