Five-goal Feyenoord start season in style

The new Eredivisie season got underway at the weekend with six players making their Feyenoord debut in Arnhem, including Feyenoord Academy graduate Noah Naujoks, who came off the bench. Arne Slot’s new-look side proved too strong for Vitesse, running out 5-2 winners.
Despite a string of mediocre results in a messy preseason, Feyenoord showed real drive and intent at the GelreDome stadium. The visitors were slow getting started, with Vitesse taking the lead through Million Manhoef, but managed to wrestle control away from the hosts and ultimately ran out worthy winners.

The foundations were laid in the first half, as Feyenoord came back from the early setback to strike twice themselves and lead at half time. Sebastian Szymański capped a very strong competitive debut in red and white with two assists – one finished by Patrik Wålemark, the other by Danilo. The Swede netted with a diagonal drive from the left, while the Brazilian striker headed home from the Pole’s free kick.

Danilo doubled his personal tally early in the second half, stealing the ball from keeper Jeroen Houwen on the edge of the box and slotting it into the empty net. It was a decisive moment in the match, which until then had swung from end to end in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half. Vitesse had levelled through Nikolai Baden Frederiksen on 56 minutes, but Javairo Dilrosun’s impressive lob from the edge of the box had then restored the visitors’ lead.

Substitute Jens Toornstra set up Lutsharel Geertruida for the fifth to put the result beyond doubt on 69 minutes. As the packed away section celebrated, Arne Slot introduced yet another debutant. Starters Jacob Rasmussen, Quinten Timber, Szymański, Dilrosun and Danilo were all appearing in Feyenoord colours for the first time, and 20-year-old Feyenoord Academy graduate Noah Naujoks joined the party from the bench in the closing stages.

Feyenoord will be looking to back up the Arnhem win in the opening home match of the season coming weekend against sc Heerenveen. The fixture on Saturday 13 August kicks off at 21:00 CET. Secure your seat here.
