Focus on final after loss in last Eredivisie round

Feyenoord went down to a 2-1 loss at home to FC Twente in the last match of the Eredivisie season on Sunday. With the league campaign now over, Arne Slot’s men can switch their focus to the Europa Conference League final against AS Roma on 25 May.
Truth be told, the hosts looked like they were already thinking about Tirana, especially in the first half. The energy, refinement and acuity that have garnered Feyenoord so many points in the Eredivisie this season appeared to have deserted them, with fatigue perhaps also playing its part after so many big games in recent months.

In midweek the visitors had secured a fourth-place finish, meaning qualification for the third qualifying round of next season’s Europa Conference League without the need to go through the playoffs. They celebrated with two first-half goals from Dimitrios Limnios and Gijs Smal.

The crowd at a packed De Kuip were hoping for another unlikely comeback like the one that snatched a point against PSV a week ago, but despite Arne Slot bringing on all five of his permitted substitutes, Feyenoord could only manage one second-half goal this time. The scorer was Cyriel Dessers.

There was to be no happy ending for the hosts then, as FC Twente held on to all three points, but it did not stop the fans bathing their team in loud cheers and applause after the final whistle. As well as celebrating their performances over the season, it was also a great send-off ahead of the club’s big day in Albania.

They now have the opportunity to write a glorious new chapter in the history of Feyenoord in Tirana when they go head-to-head with AS Roma in the UECL final on 25 May, kick-off 21:00 CET.
