‘Now we did reward ourselves, although the performance has to improve,’ says Advocaat

‘It has to improve, we know that now,’ were Dick Advocaat opening words in his analysis of Feyenoord’s 3-1 win against PSV. ‘But in the most recent matches the performance was good and we didn’t reward ourselves. Now PDV dictated the game and we scored twice before the break.’

Details can make the difference, as the head coach is only too aware. ‘Steven [Berghuis] was not really in the game until the opening goal. The crowd started to grumble at him, me too. Such a moment – getting in front of your opponent and heading in to make it 1-0 – is decisive at times like that.’

The victory against PSV pushes Feyenoord up the table. ‘Qualifying for Europe remains the goal,’ said Advocaat. ‘How doesn’t matter.’ Meaning that winning the KNVB Cup would be just as acceptable. SC Cambuur are Feyenoord’s next opponents in that competition on Thursday.

‘There’s a reason that team are top of the Keuken Kampioen Divisie [the Dutch second division],’ said Advocaat. ‘But it’s the shortest path to Europe, everyone know’s that. So, Thursday is very important for us.’
