Players return refreshed to tropical 1908

A large part of the Feyenoord squad – 26 players – reported for the first day of training on Monday morning, ahead of the 2019-2020 season. Top of the agenda was the first preseason session under the watchful eye of new coach Jaap Stam.

Tough first day back
Under the bright sun, Stam, his staff – including new assistant Said Bakkati, who also made the switch from PEC Zwolle – and the players took to the training pitch in the course of the morning. The scorching heat was no reason to ease up, though, as the squad was given a tough two-hour workout.

New face
New arrival Nick Marsman had the chance to impress on his first visit to the 1908 training complex. The keeper – who joined the club on a free transfer – joined established goalies Justin Bijlow and Elber Evora, along with coach Khalid Benlahsen. Kenneth Vermeer will join the squad later in preseason, as will Nicolai Jørgensen, Steven Berghuis, Tyrell Malacia, Renato Tapia, Luis Sinisterra and Emil Hansson, all of whom had stints with their national teams at the end of last season.

Youth players
There was a full house on the training pitch in spite of the missing contingent, as Stam gave a host of youth players the chance to impress him. Ramon Hendriks, Denzel Hall, Achraf El Bouchataoui, Cycensio Summerville, Marouan Azarkan, Cheick Touré and Naoufal Bannis all represented Feyenoord Under 19s last season.

First public session on Sunday
Feyenoord will train behind closed doors at 1908 for the rest of this week before the first open session in front of fans on Sunday. Rammstein’s concert at De Kuip on Tuesday 25 June means that the session has been scheduled later than normal this year.
