Sensational Senesi strike helps Feyenoord to victory

Feyenoord took all three points at De Kuip on Sunday for the first time this season, but the hosts had to fight tooth and nail for the win against ADO Den Haag. The memory of a disappointing first half was brushed aside after the break as Feyenoord rattled in three goals. Pick of the bunch was Marcos Senesi’s thrilling flying volley.

After an underwhelming draw against FC Twente, the home fans were hoping their side would put in a more convincing performance second time around. They were to be frustrated in an opening half characterised by sloppiness.

Feyenoord did show some attacking intent early on, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring. Jonas Arweiler beat Justin Bijlow on 11 minutes after latching onto a long ball.

The equaliser came from a corner on 27 minutes. Lutsharel Geertruida rose higher than anyone to guide the ball into the top left-hand corner. Feyenoord might even have completed the turnaround before the break, with Marcos Senesi and Bryan Linssen both spurning big heading chances.

Breath-taking goal
Dick Advocaat replaced Linssen and Orkun Kökcü at the break, with Luciano Narsingh and João Carlos Teixeira coming on. Teixeira was soon involved in some good play, while Narsingh would grab a goal later on, but it was Senesi who took centre stage. The Argentinian showed his acrobatic side by smashing a flying volley into the top corner on 56 minutes.

Chaotic spot kick
Confusion reigned in the home penalty area not long after. Adjudged to have fouled an ADO Den Haag player, Justin Bijlow saved the resulting spot kick. Play resumed for a full minute before referee Dennis Higler was directed to the VAR monitor for a possible infringement by the Feyenoord keeper. The referee duly ordered the kick retaken after he saw Bijlow leave his line early. Shaquille Pinas stepped up to net this time.

Feyenoord soon regained the lead, however. Luciano Narsingh was the goal scorer, netting with a low shot inside the box. Steven Berghuis then wrapped up the win from the penalty spot.

Tilburg up next
The win leaves Feyenoord on seven points from three matches. Next Sunday Dick Advocaat’s side travel to Willem II, kick off 14:30 CET.
