More dropped points against FC Groningen

Feyenoord failed to pick up all three points against FC Groningen for the second time this season on Saturday eveningJust like in the first fixture at De Kuip, the sides finished 1-1 at Stadion Euroborg.

Although not at the top of their game, Feyenoord’s performance deserved the reward of a winThe visitors looked a little clunky in the first half particularly, but created more than enough chances to build a lead. However, their only goal came courtesy of Cyriel Dessers. Back after a injury, the striker headed in Fredrik Aursnes’s cross with 20 minutes to go.

That finally got Feyenoord back on level terms after an early breakthrough for the hosts. Feyenoord found it hard to get into the game in the early stages and the hosts were rewarded for their constant pressure when Michael de Leeuw grabbed a goal midway through the first half.

It was not until the final stages of the first half that Feyenoord started to impose themselves. Guus Til and Luis Sinisterra had big chances to bring the sides level, but their failure to convert meant that Feyenoord had little time to push for a winner when the equaliser did finally come. That said, the visitors certainly did their best to secure the win in the second half, dominating the hosts throughout and peppering the Groningen goal until the referee finally brought the match to an end after six minutes of added-on time.

The failure to find the winner was a disappointment, but a bright spot was Patrik Wålemark’s performance after coming on off the bench. The Swede gave Dessers the perfect opportunity to net a winner not long after his leveller, but the striker was denied by a post.

In the end the draw meant that Feyenoord were unable to raise the pressure on top two Ajax and PSV, while giving fourth-placed AZ an opportunity to close the gap between the sides on Sunday. Next up for Arne Slot’s side is an away fixture at PEC Zwolle on Sunday 13 March. That one kicks off at 16:45 CET.
