Wouter Burger bound for FC Basel

Wouter Burger has agreed a permanent switch to FC Basel. The 20-year-old midfielder, who was contracted to Feyenoord until mid-2023, joins the Swiss Super League club with immediate effect.

In recent seasons Burger has been loaned out closer to home, at Rotterdam clubs Excelsior and Sparta. The versatile midfielder was born in the city close to De Kuip and joined Feyenoord Academy at 11 years of age. He made his debut in the first team in 2018.

Under coach Arne Slot, Burger played preseason friendlies as well as Europa Conference League qualifiers and the Eredivisie matches in central defence. He’s now decided to try something new in Switzerland.

‘When you leave Feyenoord as a boy who has come through the academy, I do think it has to be for a very nice new adventure,’ said Burger. ‘That’s what FC Basel is in my view. That does not change the fact that it’s tough for me to leave. This club, everything I’ve learned and live through here – both at Feyenoord Academy and in the first team – I take with me as experience and as a wonderful memory to Switzerland. I am very grateful for that, and to the fans of this fabulous club.’

Feyenoord thanks Wouter Burger and wishes him every success in Basel.
