Feyenoord has immediately strengthened its team with Anel Ahmedhodžić. The 26-year-old central defender is transferring from the English club Sheffield United and has signed a contract with De Kuip until mid-2029. Feyenoord is doing everything possible to get the Bosnian, who grew up in Malmö, Sweden, eligible to play for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League against Fenerbahçe, with the KNVB providing substantial assistance.
“Things have moved incredibly quickly in the last few days,” says Ahmedhodžić, who has been on the radar in Rotterdam South for years. "I couldn't be happier. Playing for such a big European club is something I've always worked hard for. I'm grateful that Feyenoord is giving me this opportunity and that they've done everything they can to get me eligible to play in the matches against Fenerbahçe. I can't wait to put on this shirt and give it my all with my new teammates. Here's to many great things to come."
The right-footed defender, who can also play left center back, came up through the youth academy of Swedish top club Malmö FF. Ahmedhodžić played for Sweden's youth national teams and also made one friendly appearance for the Scandinavians, but the son of Bosnian parents then opted to play for Bosnia's senior team. He made 24 appearances for them.
In Malmö, the 1.90-meter-tall defender played 83 official matches as a great talent. After being loaned to Danish club Hobro IK, Ahmedhodžić became Swedish champion in 2021. In September of that year, he made his Champions League debut against Juventus. In total, he played seven preliminary round matches and five appearances in the main tournament.
