It is that Feyenoord were already assured of a place in the play-offs of the Champions League knockouts, otherwise the away game against LOSC Lille would have gone down in the books as one of the most disastrous nights in recent club history. Brian Priske's team lost 6-1 in France partly due to three own goals and also saw Justin Bijlow and Santiago Gimenez drop out.
Nothing was spared Feyenoord in the first half. Gimenez did manage to clear an early deficit, but that was about the only positive thing about the first 45 minutes. The Mexican was injured shortly afterwards and was joined in the dressing room by Bijlow, who misjudged a high ball. To make matters worse, the French also took another lead.
Despite the good intentions with which Feyenoord started the second half, the first attack by the home side was the first to hit the target again. Priske then saw his team completely overrun and the figures became more and more painful.
The defeat in the final round of play means Feyenoord end the league phase in 19th place. Next Friday's draw for the play-off round could see Feyenoord paired with either AC Milan or PSV. What is certain is that Feyenoord will play the first game of the diptych at home.
