Feyenoord beats AZ and takes the lead

Feyenoord had an excellent night on Saturday in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie. In a De Kuip packed with enthusiastic fans, coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team proved too strong for AZ, winning 2-0. Thanks to the victory, Feyenoord has taken over the top spot from the visitors from Alkmaar.

From the very first minute, the Legion made it clear that they, too, had missed club soccer. After an international break of nearly three weeks, the atmosphere at De Kuip was immediately electric, and Feyenoord quickly asserted itself on the field as well.

Thirteen minutes in, it was Nacho Ferri who broke the deadlock. The striker fired a powerful shot into the net to make it 1-0, sending De Kuip into a frenzy for the first time that evening.

Even after halftime, the match between the Eredivisie’s first- and second-place teams remained full of intensity and suspense. Both teams played on the edge, which occasionally led to heated scuffles, though things never really got out of hand.

Just under an hour into the game, Feyenoord delivered the decisive blow. Off a corner kick, it was Javi López who scored the 2-0 goal in the 59th minute. This laid the foundation for an important victory, which earned Feyenoord not only three points but also the top spot in the standings.

With 20 points from their first eight league matches, the team can already set its sights on the UEFA Champions League. The next challenge awaits on Wednesday evening, when Italian side Como 1907 visits De Kuip for a night of European soccer.
