The absence of many injured players made itself felt at Feyenoord, where Robin van Persie had to puzzle to find a somewhat familiar formation. Supported by a sell-out crowd at the Kuip, the weakened side put up a good fight, but could barely make a fist against the experienced and well-organised Italians.
Inter struck mercilessly just before and just after half-time, building a lead for next week's return in Milan. Timon Wellenreuther prevented worse for Feyenoord by turning a penalty.
This weekend Feyenoord will not be in Eredivisie action. On Monday the team travels to Milan, where Tuesday at San Siro from 21:00 will determine which team qualifies for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
