Feyenoord is very close to securing a direct ticket to the Champions League next season. Thanks to a fortunate 2–1 victory away at Fortuna Sittard on Sunday, the gap to rivals N.E.C. and Ajax has widened to five and six points respectively, with two matches remaining.
No matter how favorable the results on the other pitches had been the night before, Feyenoord still seemed destined to be the loser of the weekend. After a decent opening phase, the Rotterdam side’s performance in Sittard gradually declined, making the home team’s lead shortly after halftime a deserved one.
Feyenoord trailed for a long time, but in the very final stages they still managed to escape. Six minutes before time, Tsuyoshi Watanabe scored the equalizer, after which Feyenoord went all out in search for more. The celebrations were enormous when a long-range shot from Givairo Read took a deflection and found the net, a goal that could prove invaluable for Feyenoord.
As early as next week, Feyenoord can officially secure its Champions League ticket, because with a win over AZ, their rivals would no longer be able to catch them. The home match against the cup winners kicks off on Sunday, May 10, at 4:45 PM.
