Feyenoord legend Ove Kindvall (82) has passed away

It is with great sadness that Feyenoord has learned of the passing of Ove Kindvall, one of the greatest players in the club's rich history. The Swedish striker, born on May 16, 1943, in Norrköping, passed away yesterday at the age of 82. His name will forever be associated with the moment he put Feyenoord firmly on the map of international top-flight football with the winning goal in the European Cup I final on May 6, 1970.

Kindvall joined Feyenoord from IFK Norrköping in 1966 and became a true phenomenon in Rotterdam. In his five seasons in red and white, he scored 129 goals in 114 official matches, an impressive average that makes him one of the most effective strikers in the club's history. His style was refined, technically gifted, intelligent, and with a rare “nose for goal.”

Kindvall reached his absolute peak on May 6, 1970, at the San Siro stadium in Milan. In extra time of the European Cup I final against Scottish club Celtic FC, it was he who scored the 2-1 goal in the 117th minute after a misunderstanding in the Scottish defense. This gave Feyenoord its first (and to date only) European Cup I in the club's history, and also the very first for a Dutch club. The historic goal made him immortal in Rotterdam and far beyond.

Although Kindvall achieved world-class success, he always remained the modest and quiet man from Sweden. His professionalism, sportsmanship, and dedication made him beloved by teammates, staff, and supporters. His contribution to Feyenoord was not limited to the field; even after his career ended, he remained involved with the club and spoke proudly of his time at De Kuip.

Feyenoord is eternally grateful to Kindvall for his contribution to one of the most glorious chapters in the club's history. His name will forever be remembered by generations of Feyenoord fans. In difficult moments, when faith is lost, there is always that image of Kindvall in 1970 – that quick sprint, that cool finish, that ecstatic joy. Proof that dreams can come true.

Feyenoord wishes Kindvall's family and loved ones strength in coping with their loss.
