Feyenoord take all three points and narrowly hold on to top spot in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie. Robin van Persie’s side made things unnecessarily difficult for themselves on Saturday against FC Volendam, but won 3-1.
It was an evening in which Feyenoord showed two very different sides. During the first half-hour, the team were so dominant that the only question seemed to be how high the score would go. But after goals from Ayase Ueda and Sem Steijn (2-0 at the break), they failed to push on, which made things tense in De Kuip after the interval.
Following Henk Veerman’s goal and a huge chance for the same striker, the victory suddenly felt in doubt. Something that had seemed unthinkable earlier. Shortly before full time, Ueda ended any remaining uncertainty with his 13th league goal of the season, ensuring Feyenoord stay ahead of PSV on goal difference.
