Feyenoord really shot itself in the foot on Sunday against Go Ahead Eagles. The team’s first home game of the season resulted in a completely unnecessary loss of points: 2-2.
The packed Kuip stadium witnessed a match that was in every way a carbon copy of last week’s season opener, with the painful difference that Feyenoord’s second-half slump this time did indeed prove costly. The 2-0 lead built up before halftime proved insufficient for the win, and even a loss was a real possibility in the closing minutes.
And yet, things had looked perfect at first. Just like a week earlier against Sparta, Feyenoord took a well-deserved lead—this time even 2-0 thanks to goals by Gjivai Zechiël and Ayase Ueda—and had countless chances to secure the victory. But just as had happened at Het Kasteel, that didn’t happen, and the opponent fought its way back into the game.
Go Ahead Eagles’ goal to cut the lead and their equalizer were by no means unexpected, and given the shots that hit the post and crossbar, things could have turned out even worse for Feyenoord. On the other hand, Mika Mármol was unlucky to see a shot hit the woodwork, resulting in a draw after just over ninety minutes.
Feyenoord’s next match is on Sunday, August 23, away against SC Cambuur, kicking off at 4:45 P.M.
