Feyenoord suffered a narrow defeat against Real Betis on Wednesday in the third matchday of the Champions League. An unfortunate handball by Jeremiah St. Juste led to the only goal of the match, scored on a penalty kick: 1-0.
Regardless of how it happened, the timing of Feyenoord’s conceded goal was particularly bitter. Coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team was in the midst of a strong run after halftime, one that had already begun at the end of the first half.
Just as the team was gaining the upper hand, St. Juste had the ball hit his arm hard inside his own penalty area. Isco slotted the ball into the corner from 11 meters, thereby deciding the match at Estadio de la Cartuja.
Thus, Feyenoord went down fighting, and the feeling lingered that they could have achieved more. It must be said, however, that Feyenoord’s threat in Seville was limited mainly to one big chance for Gjivai Zechiël, who shot over the bar from close range.
Feyenoord will resume Champions League play in two weeks at home in De Kuip against Inter (Tuesday, November 3, 9:00 p.m.). On Sunday at 2:30 p.m., the big match against PSV is scheduled in Eindhoven.
