Feyenoord secured three points in convincing fashion on Sunday in the home match against FC Groningen: 3–1. The team of coach Robin van Persie took another step towards its ultimate goal: direct qualification for the Champions League. Ilai Grootfaam made his official debut for the club, becoming the youngest Feyenoord player ever in the Eredivisie (16 years and 41 days).
In a sun-drenched Kuip, the victory was secured early on. Jordan Bos opened the scoring with a fine right-footed strike, before Ayase Ueda doubled the lead from the penalty spot.
Feyenoord were already cruising midway through the first half and, by playing solid and controlled football, eased their way to a comfortable afternoon. Ueda added his second in style after the break, taking his league tally to no fewer than 25 goals.
It was also a special afternoon for two Feyenoord players. Givairo Read made his return as a substitute after more than three months out. Shortly before full time, Ilai Grootfaam was also introduced, replacing Georginio Wijnaldum as the youngest Feyenoord player ever to feature in the Eredivisie.
With the victory, Feyenoord will finish matchday 31 in second place regardless of other results. Their next league fixture is away against Fortuna Sittard next Sunday, May 3, at 14:30.
