In a match where the stakes were clearly high, Feyenoord made a strong start and created the first chance of the game. After AZ also wasted a big opportunity, Feyenoord had several clear-cut chances in the closing stages of the first half. However, their finishing was not yet sharp.
The goal eventually came shortly after the break, courtesy of Onunta. The forward was alert at a corner and put Feyenoord into a deserved lead. The goal sparked an outpouring of emotion at Varkenoord and gave the home side extra confidence for the remainder of the match.
Feyenoord had further opportunities to extend their lead, but the post was among the obstacles that prevented a second goal. In the closing stages, Stenn de Mol made his mark. The goalkeeper kept his side level with several fine saves. When the referee blew the final whistle, the celebrations at Varkenoord erupted.
