Feyenoord V1 suffered a heavy defeat in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday evening. Away to VfL Wolfsburg, two-time winners of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, the Rotterdam side were beaten 7-0 by the German team.
Feyenoord endured a particularly unfortunate start at the Wolfsburg Stadion. Within the opening minute, the hosts were awarded a penalty following a handball by a Feyenoord player. Wolfsburg converted from the spot to take an early lead.
The German side subsequently proved far too strong for Feyenoord. Although head coach Marc Pieters’ team tried to put up a fight, Wolfsburg dominated proceedings. After the score remained 1-0 for a considerable period, the hosts extended their lead with three goals in quick succession. Goals in the 28th, 31st and 36th minutes left Feyenoord trailing 4-0 at half-time.
To make matters worse, Feyenoord suffered another setback shortly before the break when goalkeeper Claire Dinkla was forced off through injury.
Wolfsburg extend their lead
Wolfsburg continued to dominate after the break, adding a fifth goal in the 49th minute. Feyenoord struggled to create any meaningful chances and were largely forced to focus on limiting the damage.
Midway through the second half, Wolfsburg were awarded another penalty, which they converted in the 65th minute. Just two minutes later, the hosts made it 7-0, condemning Feyenoord to a heavy and disappointing defeat.
Return leg at Varkenoord
The return leg against VfL Wolfsburg is scheduled for Tuesday 10 November. Feyenoord will host the German side at Varkenoord, with kick-off set for 7:00 PM.
