Feyenoord win on crazy night in Girona

Feyenoord have secured their first three points in the Champions League. Girona FC were beaten 2-3 at home on an incredibly exciting and crazy night.

Own goals, penalty kicks, a disallowed goal and a score that went in all directions; the first ever Champions League match at Estadi Montilivi turned out to be an all-out affair. Feyenoord eventually emerged victorious, marking their first away win on Europe's highest stage since 2002.

The great spectacle in Catalonia started after 15 minutes, when Feyenoord unhappily went behind from a corner kick. An own goal soon equalised and ten minutes later Antoni Milambo even put the team ahead. It could have been even bigger if Ayase Ueda had taken the penalty awarded for a foul on Quinten Timber shortly before half-time. However, the Japanese shot at the goalkeeper.

Feyenoord were unable to continue the strong first half and had to restrict themselves to holding back after the break. That went well for a long time and the team even survived an own goal by Dávid Hancko (disallowed for offside) and a penalty kick (stopped by Timon Wellenreuther). Fifteen minutes before time, the almost inevitable equaliser was a fact after all: 2-2.

Supported by the fanatical home crowd, Girona FC seemed to push on in the hunt for more, but luck was again on Rotterdam's side. Ladislav Krejci slid a Hancko cross behind his goalkeeper to send the rain-soaked away fans into a frenzy. Feyenoord struggled to hold on in the final minutes and emerged victorious after 95 heavy minutes.
