Mao Itamura completes record transfer to Liverpool FC

Feyenoord and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the transfer of Mao Itamura. The 19-year-old Feyenoord V1 player will continue her career with the English top club with immediate effect, moving for a record fee. Itamura’s contract with Feyenoord was due to run until mid-2027.

Itamura looks back fondly on her time in Rotterdam: ‘Feyenoord has played an incredibly important role in my development, both as a footballer and as a person. I would like to thank my teammates, the coaching staff, everyone at the club and, of course, the supporters for their trust and the unforgettable moments. I will always continue to follow Feyenoord with pride.’

Itamura joined Feyenoord from JFA Academy Fukushima in the winter of 2025 and made an important contribution to the club’s sporting achievements during her time in Rotterdam. Her technical ability, unpredictable dribbling and skill in taking on opponents helped the Japan youth international become a firm fan favourite.

Last season, the cheerful Japanese player also became the club’s top scorer with eight goals and was named Player of the Year in the Eurojackpot Vrouwen Eredivisie — a first for a Feyenoord player. The award and her impressive performances attracted considerable interest from major clubs abroad, with Liverpool ultimately prepared to sign the versatile player from Feyenoord for a record fee.

Feyenoord wishes Mao every success in the next chapter of her career in Liverpool.
