Maruschka Waldus is ending her career as a professional footballer. The 32-year-old captain of Feyenoord Vrouwen 1 announced her decision today to the squad and staff.
Waldus' impressive football career took her across numerous countries and continents. The Frisian began her career at SC Heerenveen and then played abroad for Sky Blue (United States), Mallbackens (Sweden), Turbine Potsdam (Germany), Fylkir (Iceland), Western Sydney Wanderers (Australia), Vålerenga (Norway), and Adelaide United (Australia).
This past season, Waldus joined Feyenoord Vrouwen 1 and proved to be an asset to the team both on and off the pitch. With her wealth of experience, she served not only as a sounding board for head coach Jessica Torny but also as an excellent mentor to the younger players. As captain, Waldus played in 25 official matches for Feyenoord and scored twice.
"Even though I might have been able to continue playing for a few more years, this felt like the right time for me to end my long football career," said Waldus. "All in all, we can look back on a solid season with Feyenoord, and I’m proud to have been part of this club. Over the coming period, I’ll take some time to reflect and later decide what my future will look like."
Feyenoord thanks Maruschka for her service and wishes her the best of luck in the future.
