No winner in the Klassieker

The 100th edition of the Klassieker in Rotterdam ended without a winner on Sunday. Feyenoord and Ajax kept each other in a tight grip for almost the entire match: 1–1.

With the draw, Feyenoord missed the chance to put their rival at a significant distance in the race for second place. On the other hand, the team from Amsterdam also failed to close the gap—something that could easily have happened given the situation after just under an hour of play.

The 0–1 by Sean Steur came completely out of nowhere, especially since Feyenoord had hardly given anything away. It therefore felt like a deserved reward and justice when Jakub Moder equalized from the penalty spot. The Polish midfielder stepped up shortly before full time after Jordon Lotomba was brought down in the penalty area, and referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot following a VAR review.

Although the draw led to mixed feelings, Feyenoord remains in pole position in the race for second place. Besides Ajax, N.E.C. also failed to gain ground; the team from Nijmegen was held to a 2–2 draw at home against sc Heerenveen.

Feyenoord’s next league match is in two weeks, after the international break. On Sunday, April 5, Robin van Persie’s team will visit FC Volendam (kick-off at 14:30).
