Feyenoord learned a hard lesson in their first Champions League match of the season on Thursday night. The home game against Bayer Leverkusen was already decided at half-time: 0-4.
The already leaden task against the German national champions became even tougher after only five minutes, when Florian Wirtz mercilessly punished a personal error on the Rotterdam side. The visitors then proved extremely effective in a sold-out Kuip, leaving Feyenoord trailing by four goals at half-time.
Although Brian Priske's side fought back in the second half and continued to look for an equaliser, the score remained unchanged. Feyenoord's next Champions League match is on Wednesday 2 October against Girona FC. The league continues on Sunday at home against NAC Breda (14:30).
