Feyenoord secured three points against Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday. Coach Robin van Persie's team needed a penalty in injury time to defeat the Deventer side: 1-0. Steven Benda made his debut for the club, replacing the suspended Timon Wellenreuther.
A costly loss of points in the battle for second place seemed inevitable for Feyenoord, who struggled against Go Ahead Eagles. The visitors were reduced to ten men after just fifteen minutes when Thibo Baeten was sent off for a foul on Oussama Targhalline. The Moroccan international had to leave the field injured, as did his replacement Sem Steijn at half-time.
As a result, it was soon one-way traffic in the freezing cold Kuip, but Feyenoord just couldn't break the deadlock. Until Casper Tengstedt was fouled hard in the penalty area in injury time and referee Marc Nagtegaal pointed to the spot. The Danish striker stepped up to take the penalty himself, made no mistake and brought great relief to the Rotterdam camp.
Feyenoord will play at home again next week: on Sunday 22 February, Telstar will be the opponent at De Kuip (kick-off at 8 p.m.).
