Timon Wellenreuther is leaving Feyenoord. Both the club and the 30-year-old goalkeeper have reached an agreement with the German club VfL Wolfsburg. As a result, the goalkeeper - who had risen to the role of captain - is returning to his home country after four seasons at De Kuip.
“It was so wonderful,” says Wellenreuther. “When I first arrived here, I didn’t know what to expect. My time here has given me so much more than I ever could have imagined. I came as a substitute and get to leave as captain - a very proud captain. Because Feyenoord isn’t just any club - it’s unique in every way. I’ve experienced truly unforgettable moments here and felt appreciated from my very first minutes. That appreciation grew, just like my love for the club and the fans.”
“That doesn’t make it easy to leave Feyenoord. I’m going to miss that intense shared experience with everyone. People still talk to me about ‘that save’ in the title race in 2023. As a goalkeeper, those are the kinds of memories you want to leave behind, and I’m glad I was able to provide that. Winning the league title was incredible, as were the amazing Champions League matches both at and away from De Kuip, as well as winning the KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruijff Shield. It was an honor to wear this jersey and play for this club. A part of me will always be a Feyenoord fan. To everyone within the club and to those who carry Feyenoord in their hearts: thank you for everything.”
Feyenoord wishes Wellenreuther the very best of luck at his new club, VfL Wolfsburg.
