Gernot Trauner made his comeback for Feyenoord on Wednesday, playing his first game of the new season. The captain did so in a closed practice match between Feyenoord 1 and Feyenoord Under 21. The main team emerged victorious at Varkenoord: 6-1. The practice game was preceded by a minute's silence for Jeffrey Oost, the Feyenoord Academy coach who died last weekend at the age of 68.
Trauner was recovering recently from an injury suffered during this summer's European Championships in Germany. The Austrian played 45 minutes in his familiar spot in the heart of the defense, in a team in which the internationals were obviously missing due to the international period. He was replaced after the break by Facundo Gonzalez, the Uruguayan who arrived on loan from Juventus last week and made his first appearance for Feyenoord at Varkenoord.
Feyenoord Under 21 started the game bright and sharp and that led to an early goal from Paolo Rudisill. It was thanks to Jan Plug that the equalizer was not almost immediately on the board; he cleverly cleared an almost certain goal by Julián Carranza off the line.
The Argentine did hit the target later in his first unofficial game in the main squad, twice. The striker signed for 3-1 (assist Chris-Kévin Nadje after an individual move) and 4-1 (assist Bart Nieuwkoop). He did so after Nieuwkoop had equalized from a corner kick by Igor Paixão and the Brazilian himself had put the hosts ahead. He curled a free kick in beautifully from about twenty meters.
Devin Haen, who was brought on ten minutes before time, added lustre to his unofficial Feyenoord debut by also scoring twice. The striker, rented out to FC Dordrecht, was served at his beck and call by youth players Hakeem Agboluaje and Twan Schens, who also came on as substitutes.
