Feyenoord fall to Ajax defeat
eyenoord failed to take their chances against Ajax in the Eredivisie on Sunday afternoon, going down 2-1 to the league leaders at De Kuip. Ronald Koeman’s side were on top for most of the first half, taking the lead through a fine Graziano Pellè header. But Ajax hit back through two soft goals by Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and Joël Veltman to claim the points.
Feyenoord were the dominant team in the first half, although that was down to attitude rather than finesse, as both sides found it hard to play attractive football.
The home side’s passing was sloppy, but a well-implemented training ground move earned them the lead on the half hour. Jean-Paul Boëtius found Bruno Martins Indi free on the left wing. The defender dinked in a great cross that Pellè met with his head, powering the ball past Jasper Cillessen.
Feyenoord had not created much in the way of chances up till then, although the same could be said for the visitors. The Ajax attack lacked penetration and the home defence looked to be in control, marshalled by Bruno Martins Indi, who returned to the starting line-up after a three-match suspension at the expense of Joris Mathijsen.
Despite that, Ajax managed to draw level at the end of the first half. Ricardo Kishna got to the bye-line, playing the ball across goal. Substitute Kolbeinn Sigthorsson managed to sneak in between two defenders and get his foot on it to net.
Chances remained scare at both ends after the break. Feyenoord gradually started to rack up territory and possession, but the hosts were lacking the creativity needed to unlock the Ajax defence.
The visitors were content to soak up the pressure, but with 18 minutes of regular time to play they suddenly had the lead.
Like the first, the goal came out of the blue. Daryl Janmaat gave away a cheap corner and when Feyenoord failed to clear their lines Joël Veltman tapped in from a few yards.
Feyenoord tried to force an equaliser in the final quarter of an hour, with Mitchell Te Vrede coming on as an extra striker. But the visitors were able to limit them to long balls into the box and, in the end, Ajax comfortably held on to the three points.
