Koeman wants to see Feyenoord play without fear
Feyenoord have something to put right at De Kuip on Sunday. After the 1-0 reverse at RKC Waalwijk the Rotterdammers want to set the record straight at home to PSV. Coach Ronald Koeman is confident going into the match. ‘This team is capable of a lot, although we have been below par a couple of times this season in terms of results and how we’ve played,’ he explained on Friday during a press conference at De Kuip. ‘I had a good feeling against RKC, as I do now, but it does not always come out, it seems.’
Koeman owes that feeling in part to the way his players have responded since the defeat in Waalwijk last weekend. ‘After a game like that, the coach can talk and coach, but at the end of the day the dressing room has to know: this is it, this is how we’re going to do it.’
The coach especially hopes his team will play without fear on Sunday, as Feyenoord have done over the past two seasons. ‘That lack of inhibition is not always there; the players are thinking more,’ said Koeman. ‘But players need to feel completely free on the pitch. If they do not, the game will be static.’
PSV have had an on-off season themselves and are currently one place lower in the table than Feyenoord with a point less. ‘PSV are still a team with lots of quality and talent,” Koeman warned. ‘That said I think we are favourites, because we are for every home game. On the other hand, we have to be strong if we’re going to win on Sunday. PSV haven’t won at De Kuip in recent years, but that shouldn’t lull us into a false sense of security.’
Koeman trained on Friday with all his first choices. Based on observations, it seems that Jean-Paul Boëtius and Ruben Schaken will play on the flanks. It will be a return to the starting line-up for Boëtius, after John Goossens was preferred on the left against RKC. Bruno Martins Indi, who missed the RKC game with a hamstring injury, started the final game at Friday training.
