Feyenoord prepare for Johan Cruijff Shield with a win
Feyenoord rounded off preseason on Saturday with a 1-0 win against Real Sociedad at De Kuip. Nicolai Jørgensen scored the only goal of the final friendly before next weekend’s Johan Cruijff Shield season curtain-raiser.
The Dane netted with a header within the opening fifteen minutes, scoring in the traditional preseason fixture for the second year running.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst will have been pleased with the way his team created their goal. Feyenoord attacked with speed down the left, with the ball coming through Haps to Boëtius, who crossed perfectly for last season’s Eredivisie top scorer to finish.
Another pleasing note for the coach was the involvement of new signings Haps and Boëtius. He will hope to see more of that type of incisive offence from his team this coming season.
The two summer arrivals were busy all match. Haps was constantly looking to break forward, while Boëtius went close to doubling the lead on the stroke of half time. His venomous shot whizzed inches wide.
Vermeer was called into action on the half hour. The Spaniards rarely threatened in the first 45, but the Feyenoord keeper was forced into a save after a fast breakout.
The pace went down a notch or two after the break. The visitors were finding it hard to hold on to possession, and they were practising their offside trap as much as they could. Feyenoord, meanwhile, lacked the nous to put the Sociedad outfit under too much pressure.
Otherwise the hosts looked very comfortable at the back, although the question of how Feyenoord would evolve after last season’s title-winning campaign remains unanswered a week ahead of the Johan Cruijff Shield match against KNVB Cup holders Vitesse.
Even so, victory against a team that finished sixth in last season’s La Liga will give the Dutch champions confidence ahead of a season full of new challenges.
