AGREEMENT IN PRINCIPLE: NEW CONTRACT FOR JØRGENSEN TO 2022

Feyenoord and Nicolai Jørgensen have reached an agreement in principle on a new deal. The 28-year-old Danish international will sign a new contact when he returns from his holidays. The new deal runs until mid-2022, a year longer than his current one.
Trophies
Since Jørgensen arrived at the club from Danish champions FC Copenhagen in the summer of 2016, Feyenoord have won silverware no fewer than four times, with a Dutch championship, a KNVB Cup and two Johan Cruyff Shields added to the trophy cabinet.

Goals
Jørgensen played a big part in Feyenoord’s 15th Eredivisie title win in 2016-2017, with 21 goals and 14 assists in his first league campaign at the club. The Dane topped the goal scoring charts with that haul. In total, Jørgensen has racked up 48 goals and 22 assists in 104 official matches for the club, including two in the Champions League.

Rankled
Technical director Sjaak Troost stressed that both parties are happy with the discussions that led to the extension. ‘It’s great that Nicolai is raring to go again after a season that didn’t go as he’d hoped due to injuries. He is rankled and wants to make up for last year with Feyenoord. In doing so, Nicolai is sending out the right signals to the other players.’

Message
The new head coach Jaap Stam is also very glad that the striker’s renewed commitment. ‘The club and Nicolai are sending out a great message. Nicolai has shown he is one of the top strikers in the Eredivisie. He can make a difference for Feyenoord, together with the other attackers, with his experience, technical qualities and physic. I’m looking forward to working with him.’

Denmark
After representing Denmark at Russia 2018, Nicolai hopes to add to his 41 caps as his country works towards Euro 2020 qualification. The Danes played two Group D ties at the beginning of June – a 1-1 draw against Ireland and a 5-1 win against Georgia – which delayed Jørgensen’s summer break. Feyenoord begin preseason on Monday 24 June, with the Dane back in training on 8 July.
