Feyenoord back on song against FC Twente

Feyenoord beat FC Twente 5-1 at De Kuip on Sunday afternoon in the Eredivisie. It was the perfect response from Jaap Stam’s men after Thursday’s chastening 3-0 loss at home to AZ. Sam Larsson was the main man, netting twice and bringing about the third, when his shot was deflected in off Peet Bijen. Steven Berghuis and Luis Sinisterra also scored.
The AZ reverse was a painful one after a 3-3 draw against FC Emmen and a 1-0 loss to Rangers FC. Head coach Stam challenged his side to show their mettle against FC Twente and they certainly responded.

Steven Berghuis opened the scoring within five minutes, coming off the flank to net in the top right-hand corner with his left foot. The winger celebrated his goal with the whole team, but was plunged into dismay in 23 minutes when FC Twente grabbed an equaliser.

Jens Toornstra ceded possession in the middle of the park, passing straight to Aitor Cantalapiedra. He played a one-two with Haris Vuckic, before netting. Fortunately, Feyenoord had an immediate answer to the counterblow, edging ahead again three minutes later. Luis Sinisterra played it back to Sam Larsson, who beat FC Twente keeper Joel Drommel with his shot.

Drommel was forced into a series of good saves early in the second half as Feyenoord looked to extend their lead. He was finally beaten on 55 minutes when FC Twente skipper Peet Bijen deflected a Larsson shot into the net.

The fourth goal came on 67 minutes, when Luis Sinisterra pounced on a rebound from a Renato Tapia shot. The final word was Larsson’s. He put Drommel under pressure and when the keeper tried to clear he only smashed the ball against the Swede’s right foot and into the net.

The big win sets Feyenoord up for the upcoming visit of Porto. The Portuguese are Feyenoord’s opponents in the Europa League on Thursday evening. The next Eredivisie fixture is on Sunday afternoon, when Stam’s side travel to Fortuna Sittard.
