Feyenoord drop points against FC Twente

The first home match of the 2020-2021 Eredivisie season ended in frustration for Feyenoord. Despite a strong finish, Dick Advocaat’s team were unable to find a later winner against FC Twente, as the match ended 1-1.

The late rally came after a weak start to the encounter by the hosts. Pre-match, FC Twente had said they wanted to put Feyenoord under pressure and that’s exactly what they did, with an early breakthrough. The match was just two minutes old when Václáv Cerny rifled home from the left side of the penalty area.

The goal forced Advocaat to change his plans, as his side looked to get back into the game. It took the hosts a while to get going, but the moves started to flow as the half wore on, with chances for Marcos Senesi, Mark Diemers and Ridgeciano Haps, among others.

Two penalties
The biggest chance of all fell to Steven Berghuis on 29 minutes, when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Lutsharel Geertruida. Berghuis stepped up to take the spot kick, which Joël Drommel saved, but in the race for the rebound Berghuis was upended by Julio Plequezuelo. Berghuis made no mistake with the second penalty in two minutes, stroking home to level.

When the teams returned to the field of play at the start of the second half the hosts were without Eric Botteghin. The central defender had pulled up with a hamstring problem just before the half-time whistle. He was replaced by Bart Nieuwkoop, who took up the right-back position, with Lutsharel Geertruida moving into central defence alongside Senesi. The new formation gave Feyenoord more balance and the hosts began to take control of the match.

Big chances
Initially Feyenoord were unable to convert their supremacy into goal-scoring opportunities, but as the match moved into the final stages the hosts started to open the visitors up. By then, Advocaat had brought on Luciano Narsingh, Róbert Bozeník and João Teixeira, the Portuguese midfielder making his Feyenoord debut. With the clock almost run down the hosts suddenly racked up chance after chance. Berghuis spurned two nailed-on opportunities, while Narsingh poked wide with just Drommel to beat. In the end, FC Twente survived to claim a hard-fought point.

ADO Den Haag up next
De Kuip plays host to Feyenoord again next Sunday, as Feyenoord try to secure their first home win of the season against ADO Den Haag. Kick-off is at 12:15 CET.
