Feyenoord fight back to rescue a point against PSV

A resilient Feyenoord clawed their way back from a two-goal deficit to grab a point against PSV on Sunday. Arne Slot’s side looked to be heading for defeat at De Kuip with five minutes left on the clock, but Cyriel Dessers scored twice to earn Feyenoord a 2-2 draw.
After Thursday’s heroics in Marseille, perhaps few would have predicted that final score when the referee blew for half time. Despite the support of a packed-out De Kuip, Feyenoord found themselves chasing the game and looking fatigued against a PSV side that were looking to close the gap on league leaders Ajax to two points with a win.

The visitors led 2-0 and that did not flatter them. Cody Gakpo notched both goals before the half-hour mark, testing Feyenoord’s resolve to the max. That said, in jubilant mood ahead of kick-off due to Feyenoord’s Marseille performance and the resulting berth in the Europa Conference League final, the crowd were certainly not giving up on their team.

Slot made three personnel changes at the start of the second half, with Jens Toornstra, Patrik Wålemark and Bryan Linssen coming on and Feyenoord immediately looked busier. The first chances came soon after, but PSV were happy to defend their lead in every way possible, even if it did not look pretty at times.

Feyenoord kept plugging away, though, and they were rewarded for their tenacity in the final few minutes of the match. First Dessers scored with his head to rachet up the pressure on the visitors. With PSV looking rocked, the hosts went again and when a Toornstra shot hit Mauro Junior’s arm in the box, referee Serdar Gözübüyük pointed to the spot.

The visitors were furious, but Gözübüyük waved away their pleas and Dessers stepped up to stroke home deep into time added on. It was at least as much as Feyenoord deserved. The equaliser unleashed was absolute scenes in the stands, not least because the point virtually assures the hosts of a third-place finish in the Eredivisie. FC Twente are six points behind with two matches to play and Feyenoord have a better goal difference.
