JENS TOORNSTRA EXTENDS CONTRACT UNTIL 2022

After agreeing a contract renewal with Nicolai Jørgensen, Feyenoord have now reached an agreement in principle on a contract extension with Jens Toornstra. The 30-year-old midfielder will commit his immediate future to the club after the summer break by signing a new deal through the summer of 2022. Feyenoord and Toornstra have also expressed their intentions to continue their relationship after the midfielder hangs up his playing boots.

Five trophies in five years
Toornstra, who arrived at De Kuip from FC Utrecht in August 2014, has renewed his contract twice before. Five years into his stay, the midfielder is one of the longest serving players at the club. In his time at De Kuip Toornstra has won two KNVB Cups, an Eredivisie title and two Johan Cruyff Shields.

Success
Toornstra has also enjoyed personal success while at the club, including four appearances for the Dutch national team. In Feyenoord’s Eredivisie title-winning year the fans voted him player of the season and he was presented with the Bronze Boot at the Footballer of the Year Gala. In five seasons at the club Toornstra has played 190 matches, scoring no fewer than 45 goals and claiming 40 assists.

Feyenoord through and through
Said technical director Sjaak Troost: ‘Holding on to the established players in the squad is at least as important as bringing in fresh blood. Jens proves, year in, year out, that he is a player we can build on and he also often leads the fight.’

‘With his experience and performances, he can now be considered to be one of the mainstays,’ Troost said. ‘That makes him one of the experienced players the young players in our squad can learn from. Jens is naturally also Feyenoord through and through and it’s great that we can explore whether he can stay at the club after his career.’

Continuity
‘It’s good for the quality of the squad and important in terms of continuity that players like Nicolai and Jens renew their contracts,’ said head coach Jaap Stam. ‘Players and coaches also want to get every last drop out of it. To do that you need team players with quality and a certain strong mentality.’
