‘Loss disappointing, including how it came about’, says Stam

Feyenoord head coach Jaap Stam summarised Thursday night’s 2-0 loss to Young Boys in one word at the post-match press conference: ‘Unusual. It was an unusual evening due to the defeat, but especially because of how it came about.’
His team conceded two penalties in the opening half an hour. The first was awarded after Edgar Ié made contact with the ball with his raised arm in the box. ‘It must have been a mental lapse,’ Stam sighed.

‘Of course, everyone’s angry in the dressing room when you mention that moment. That’s because it was an important moment. After that the match was completely different. You play differently when you are behind, on a very fast artificial pitch, which we also had to get used to.’

At 2-0 down Feyenoord did fight their way back into the game, creating a couple of openings and giving away virtually nothing, but they didn’t manage to get a goal. ‘It’s a shame we didn’t reward ourselves for our play, especially in the second half,’ said the head coach. ‘I had hoped for more today ahead of the Sunday’s Klassieker.’
